Medicare Locals will share in a $50m funding pool to assist in the roll-out of the forthcoming PCEHR. The funding is in addition to the $233m measures announced in the May federal Budget. The federal government has launched an online ehealth education portal aimed at giving consumers and health providers information about the forthcoming national ehealth system. The site launch follows the recent topping up of ehealth funds, to the tune of $233 million, in last week’s federal budget. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is lukewarm about the new federal Budget, indicating there is little new in it for GPs.  “The College is disappointed with the loss of the General Practice Immunisation PIP,” said RACGP president Claire Jackson, in a statement. Professor David Glance, the director for software practice at the University of Western Australia, had some reservations. In the lead up to the introduction of the PCEHR on July 1, industry experts have called for the regulation of clinical software. The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has stepped up pressure on the federal government to compensate doctors for managing a patient’s PCEHR. AMA president Steve Hambleton said the government had not allocated additional funding within the MBS to cover doctor’s time and effort setting up and maintaining a PCEHR. An Australia-wide survey of specialist and general practice clinicians has found significant concerns about the administrative requirements of the PCEHR. It also uncovered worries about the financial impact the PCEHR will have on clinicians who guide their patients through the PCEHR process. The survey, conducted online by the AMA, garnered 197 responses. The majority of respondents were GPs, although a total of 18 specialties were represented overall.
