Dr Edwin Kruys - Geraldton Medical GroupThere I am, in my consulting room, behind closed doors. My email inbox is overflowing and the messages via the internal messenger system are stacking up. There is a limit to the phone calls you can answer during a consultation before a patient marches out and decides to look for another doctor. Yet as GPs we’re in the middle of the web and somehow we manage to communicate a lot – not only with our patients – but also with receptionists, nurses, registrars, medical students, allied health, other doctors...   more

Dr Nathan Pinskier has a passion for technology. The head clinician of a five-clinic medical practice located in Melbourne, he is also a clinical lead at NEHTA and sits on the ehealth standing committee at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Dr Pinskier is also ehealth spokesperson for the RACGP, which this week launched new implementation guidelines for doctors wishing to undertake video consultations with their patients. A sea-change in patient treatment is underway in Australia. The federal government’s creation of MBS items for teleconsultations will now make it easier for people in remote and rural areas to access specialist healthcare. But despite this innovation, the need for a human touch in medicine is not going to go away. In fact, it could become even more important, said Professor Moyez Jiwa, professor of health innovation at Curtin University, in Western Australia. Professor Jiwa spoke with ehealthspace.org on the eve of a conference...   more

Ehealth promises to improve the quality of life in urban and metropolitan areas. However, it holds even greater promise for people living in rural and remote areas who typically have a lower life expectancy – particularly if they’re indigenous – and much poorer access to medical facilities. Dr Jenny May is a general practitioner at Tamworth, in the north west of New South Wales. She’s also the chair of the National Rural Health Alliance, a group that represents of 31 national rural health organisations. “The Alliance encompasses the...   more

Australia’s storied CSIRO is a world leader in the development and trial of ehealth technology, but its acting ICT chief executive and e-health theme leader is a little less-well known. Twelve years ago Dr David Hansen (PhD) was based in the UK working in genomics with Celera, the company that unravelled the human genome. He was working with a start-up that developed genomics tools and the data integration tools were needed for the human genome project. His work involved the publicly funded efforts to understand the genome and the...   more

Just over a decade ago Professor Mohamed Khadra was diagnosed with cancer. His experience at the other end of a surgeon’s knife transformed his opinions about patients and the shortcomings of Australia’s healthcare system. His first book, The Patient, examined his illness and subsequent recovery. And more recently he authored a book, Terminal Decline, about the parlous state of Australian healthcare. In Prof Khadra’s opinion, the system only succeeds in spite of itself thanks to the unflagging commitment of doctors, nurses and other...   more

Technology is rarely top of a medical practitioner's list of interests. But for Dr Alan Snell, the administrative difficulties he faced as a family physician was the catalyst for a new career that's seen him become a Chief Medical Informatics Officer. I caught up with Dr Snell at CHIK Service's Health-e-Nation conference -- check out his story in the embedded clip below. And make sure you watch all the other videos we're posting from Health-e-Nation over at our YouTube channel, eHealthSpaceTV.   more
