LONDON - Charles Gutteridge has been appointed as the first national clinical director for informatics, the UK Department of Health announced today.
Charles GutteridgeCharles has been the medical director at Barts and the London Trust since 2002 and a consultant haematologist there and at Newham General Hospital. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists.

The picture archiving and communications system (PACS) has proved its mettle in England's recent "big freeze" by allowing clinicians to respond with fast safe diagnosis and treatment for patients injured in the severe weather.
PACS is embedded into the daily work of the NHS and this digital technology helped to support major improvements in the care offered, at a time of dangerous snow and ice conditions for pedestrians and road users.

LONDON - One million electronic health records have been transferred using the GP2GP service, part of the National Programme for IT.
GP2GP, the national system that enables patients' electronic health records to be transferred directly and securely from one GP practice to another, reached the major milestone of having transferred one million records in February 2010, and the number is set to grow as more GP practices are enabled and a greater number of systems become available later in the year.
