It’s been a monumental few years for Libby Owen-Jones, who is the Clinical Systems Project Director at Austin Health, one of two public hospitals selected by Victoria’s Department of Health to trial a phased roll-out of eHealth services.
“It’s been a huge challenge, implementing such a massive, transformative change into a health system when hospitals have traditionally been run on paper,” Ms Owen-Jones says.
Since the project went live in June 2011, all radiology orders are fully electronic (end to end), and 95 per cent of pathology orders...

When the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse cancer centre opens next year, it won’t take long to get up to speed. The facility, located on the grounds of Sydney’s RPA, is expected to treat a quarter of New South Wales’ cancer patients. With that demand in mind, you’d expect the centre’s chief information officer to be focused on developing large scale health technology systems. It turns out the opposite is true for Lifehouse CIO Anne Marie Hadley. Priority number one at the $142 million, 43,5000 square metre facility is the patient. Information...

Ulcers, damaged nerves and blood vessels in the lower limbs can lead to hospitalisation and be life threatening by causing organs to fail and the need to amputate if infections take hold.Yet despite this reality, Australia is doing poorly in providing adequate healthcare for people with foot disease....
